OCD causes a person to have irrational thoughts known as ‘obsessions’ and is characterised by developing and performing repetitive actions or ‘compulsions’ to try and deal with the anxiety associated with the obsession. Some people only experience obsessions, whilst others experience a combination of both obsessions and compulsions.
At Aspris, we understand that there are many underlying causes of OCD and we help you to identify and, if appropriate, modify the distorted beliefs that lead to the problematic behaviours. In addition, our team of experts have extensive experience in treating dual diagnoses, including anxiety or depression.
Common OCD symptoms
There are different types of OCD, but the most common symptoms of OCD involve constant checking, cleaning and avoiding certain things. Examples can include:
- Checking if a household appliance is turned off
- Washing yourself or objects more than usual
- Only touching things with a tissue or avoiding items which may be contaminated
- Repeating actions a set number of times or for a specific period of time
Treatment for OCD
Other than OCD medication, recommended OCD treatment includes cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and compassion-focused approaches. A therapist can support you in using behavioural experiments in order to enhance your belief for potential change.
If you think that you may be suffering from OCD, it is essential that you seek help and consider OCD therapy. Priory provides a relaxed, friendly environment for treatment and is sympathetic to your concerns.
